School volunteering scheduled

September 15th, 2014 at 12:59 pm

Since I am not working full time this year I am going to volunteer more with my children's schools. I am heading the used book swap events at one school, and I will be secretary of my other child's chorus booster club. I don't want a position involving lots of "limelight", I'm quite the introvert. I realize that both of these positions will require making connections with people, and that part is ok. Its good for me to step out of my comfort zone and do hard things, but I still want to stay true to my strengths and preferences.

Today I start my supervision hours, I will be meeting with 2 clients. I'm eager to get started!

This is inspiring. What are your strategies for purposeful, exploratory conversations with others? I always feel awkward and second-guess or nitpick myself, and want to get over those hangups when meeting new people.

I just sort of "fake it till I make it", lol. I have to consciously banish negative self-talk in my head, and try to find the "good" in the verbal exchange. Maybe I want to say something friendly so the other person feels a little more comfortable. Maybe I am conversing so we can exchange information. I'll even recognize when I am conversing just to make a connection with another in the organization. (Obviously not all of my socializing is like this, just on those occasions when I'm feeling awkward and not at ease!)
